5’37 Sandy Denny – Who Knows Where the Time Goes? (live at the BBC 1973)

Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving
But how can they know it’s time for them to go?
Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming
I have no thought of time

Sandy Denny’s most famous song recorded for a John Peel show on radio 1 called Sounds of the Seventies. Three things which made me choose this song tonight. First of all her voice of course, still the purest, most yearning of them all. How could someone with such a beautiful voice be so unhappy? Second the lyrics which have this Holden Caulfield appeal. An innocent question which goes straight to the heart of things. And then last but not least, the loose, floating structure of the song and the play of the instruments. So many pauses, so much air to breathe in between the music.

(The list of all 337 selections since 1st February 2010 is here.)
